Playing Characteristics
Niall was originally playing with new SM4 Vokey wedges that have been redesigned for a higher launch ball-flight with less backspin. This means wedge shots are harder to control as the high flight is very difficult to play in the wind and on delicate low pitch shots. Vokey wedges are cast from mild steel and the head and hosel are two separate parts that get attached during manufacturing, they are not one piece which can lead to poor feel. The casting process also make wedges harder in feel and much more brittle leading to lack of shot sensation and less compression for spin control on the ball.
He wanted a lower ball flight with better spin. He wanted more feel and a better sense of the ball on the face. He also wanted the sole of the wedge ground to suit his individual set up and shot making style. It was important to get the wedges to match his iron setup also so he had a consistent flow through the set.

What we built as a solution
The ForeGolf Hakusa wedges are forged from one of the softest steels S25C. Each head is forged from one single piece of steel so there are no joins between the hosel and head. This allows for the best and softest feeling from any wedge in the world. So plenty of feel.

Niall wanted the wedges to feel as good as his iron set that we had built so we used the same shaft to keep the feel of his set consistent. The lofts were set to 53* and 58* to allow Niall the yardages he wanted to hit them and then we completed the 58* with a custom grind on the back edge and heel to allow him to “slide” the club under the ball in bunkers and close to the green for the ultimate shot control around the green.

Probably best to allow Niall to sum up what he likes about the ForeGolf wedges:

“Hi Derek,
Just a quick note re my ForeGolf wedges. I’m really pleased with the performance. As we discussed the new grooves in most of the new wedges out there pop the ball up without a good flight, but I’m amazed at how you’ve managed to achieve the new grooves with the spin and lowering, penetrating flight of old grooves.
I used them last month for the first time and shot a -7 (65) round first time out. Usually I spend more time with new wedges before gaming them but didn’t need to after you built them just to my requirements.
Best of luck with the wedge venture, they really are fantastic looking
Regards,
Niall
