We’re always working on something new at ForeGolf HQ and regularly test different combinations of club heads and shafts, to get every last bit of performance out of a club head.
Lately, we have been experimenting with the latest shaft technology and specifically micro-laminate shaft construction. This new material allows shafts to be made very light but still retain enough strength to manage a hundred or so miles an hour and still hit big drives straight and long.
With ultra-lightweight designs from Oban, Aldila, Miyazaki and Nippon it allows us to keep the shaft really light, which makes the head go faster. However with this drop in club weight we always have to check that the golfers natural rhythm isn’t affected, a big drop in shaft weight can unbalance the club and make it harder to swing consistently.
Another trick we use, especially given the large 460cc heads, is to bring the flex up and make it a little stiffer in flex to allow for the new lightweight thinner wall of the shaft. When the shaft gets very light and especially around the 55 gram mark it can be important to increase the flex.
It’s not unusual for us to use X flex in this format, for normal club golfers as the shaft needs to be a little more stable given the new increase in speed and reduction in shaft wall weight.
