Player Update: Carmel sinks the winning putt to win the All Ireland Junior Cup

Player Update: Carmel Murphy

When we hand build clubs it’s all about matching the club exactly to how the players swings. Having clubs handmade produces confidence and consistency and that’s what Carmel needed when she came down the stretch playing in the final match for Wexford Golf Club.

Hi Derek

You may recall that I called in to say hello last week when playing Killeen Castle. Just wanted to tell you that we (Wexford Golf Club) won the All Ireland Junior Cup today. I had the privilege of sinking the winning putt on the 19th to win the trophy.

Heart stopping stuff, first ever for our club. I was 4 down yesterday with 6 to play and won on the 18th!

Still getting used to my new clubs, but I shot 40 points last Thursday week and 36 points on Saturday and 36 points in Enniscorthy on Monday so something is definitely working! It’s just matter of trusting myself.

Thanks for everything,

Carmel

What happened during her session

Carmel was a 9 handicapper who came to see us originally with a set of Ping irons that were gents length and gents weight with a seniors flex graphite shaft. She could hit them but there was no balance in the clubs,  struggling as they felt heavy and she couldn’t feel the head, as the shaft tip was too firm.

This meant she couldn’t control them, suffered with poor tempo and lacked distance (as she hit them very high). The strongest part of her game was her driver (which she hit great) and all we needed was to tweak it for length and balance weight so it matched the “flow” or balance we wanted in her set.

What changes we made to make her a better golfer

After we assessed her, we saw her swing was good and repetitive but she needed a lighter balance weight to suit her rhythm. It was very noticeable that when we had her hit a lighter shafted softer tipped shaft, she hit the ball much sweeter and with streets more control. Essentially she needed more feel from her irons and with a change of head design and loft settings for a stronger lower flight we were all sorted. We then tweaked her own wedges to match the irons and her set was now complete.

Well done Carmel, we just knew those new irons would make all the difference.
