Cobra has decided to up the ante this year and have developed a fully adjustable driver, fairway wood and hybrid for their line-up for 2013.
The system for this loft adjustment is the first of its kind in golf and is truly revolutionary in terms of its adaptability of the clubs. This technology has been called “MyFly” by Cobra and involves a little window in the hosel of the club that shows the loft of the club once it’s been twisted, secured and screwed into the desired degree. This technology is a first in golf and no doubt other companies will follow.
Here are some of the key points:
Driver:
- The Driver is a 460cc design but looks a good deal smaller with a nice even shape to it, is quite light in terms of raw head-weight with no heavy feel from this machine
- It comes in 4 different colour options Orange, Blue, Red or Grey.
- Numbers wise it stacks up very well with good high launch angles and then the new loft adjuster takes care of the spin control and it has 6 different shaft settings.
- One really important thing to note, is the loft on the driver head doesn’t actually change; it’s the orientation of the shaft in the neck through the new hosel sleeve that changes the head position and “affects” the loft position at impact. It does not change the physical loft of the driver. There is also a slightly more closed setting or “draw” position on the 9.5* and 10.5* setting.
- With this information we found that like most of today’s advanced designed drivers and especially this loft adjustable example, the shaft choice is critical. We found the tip needs to be profiled to suit the individual angle of attack and strike positioning of the golfer. We also found that the precise “spineing” (locating and positioning the “flow” or flex movement at the tip of some shaft designs) of the shaft helps a lot.
- In other words, our testing uncovered that if the shaft isn’t right from the start, the different lofts adjusted at the shaft angle will not work effectively and the true performance of this fantastic product will be virtually wasted.
- Get the shaft right and we saw distances touching 270 yards off 147 MPH and get the wrong shaft and the ball launches so high we couldn’t get it over 240 yards with the same speed.
- Another great thing about this product, adjustability aside, is the quality of the head material and particularly the design and steel used to make the face. We found it one of the most consistent drivers for yardage we have ever tested. The distances were so consistent even on the off centre strikes.
- Layman’s terms, this driver is very forgiving.
Fairway Woods:
- The fairway woods will follow a similar path with the loft adjustment through the shaft sleeve that allows for 6 different positions from 3 + – 14* through to 4 – 16* and everything in between.
- It will have the same colour options as the driver and comes in 3 – 4 and 5 – 7 heads.
- Again and quite similar to the driver, shaft choice is critical and getting the length just right is a very important factor in achieving the correct flight, performance and yardage.
Hybrids:
- The story continues into the hybrid clubs with colour and adjustability with all the same points on the shaft to note.
- The lofts are listed as 2 – 3, a 3 – 4 and a 4 – 5 which gives loft options for every combination you can think of. This adjustability will allow us to cover all the gaps and build the correct yardage gaps between the irons and fairway woods.
Irons:
- Another winning style from Cobra with the Amp Cell iron that comes in a nice cavity with a low power-bar design in the head to promote ease of hit and a great solid feel.
- There is a slick triple grind on the sole to aid in ease of strike off different course conditions. The soft feel from the club comes from the plastic polymer material that surrounds the inside the back cavity.
- This club will suit the player who wants the shape of a classic head design but with great feel normally reserved for softer forged clubs. This is a great little club-head and looks set to be one of our winning additions to our range for 2013.
- We have found some winning shafts to match with this new head and in particular the Nippon 950 and the KBS shaft were superb.
