We had a fitting with a customer and during his session we compared the performance of his own clubs against our custom test clubs. At the end, he took a look at what we recommended what would be more suited and he thought our clubs were ” a little on the dear side”. We thought it would be interesting to compare prices, so we asked him how much he had paid for his current set of irons.
His Irons
His irons were a set of Taylor Made Burner Irons (4-SW) in standard steel regular flex, they cost him €695
What was wrong with them
His shafts were too soft in flex for him and the lengths were too short. The lie angle was too flat and lofts were very strong. This meant that his swing was steep and across the line with the ball going to the right with thin shots very much the norm.
How we retro custom built them to suit
To get the clubs to perform for him we needed to change the shafts to True Temper Dynamic Gold SL S300. We changed the length to + 3/4 longer, a 2 degree upright lie, put the lofts back to standard and put a midsize grip on the suit his hand size. This all cost €340 for the whole set to be rebuilt. His clubs are now perfect but to get them to this point where he can successfully play with them, overall they cost €1,035
The ForeGolf Alternative Ending
If he had come to us first and had the same set set of clubs hand built to his measurements, they would have cost €795
He bought what he thought was a good deal for a set of clubs, without taking into account would he be able to hit them? A little dearer in the short term but so much cheaper in the long run.
Buying clubs on just price alone, can end up costing a lot more than you think.
Recently a customer booked a session for his son, David. He had grown and his irons were just too short for him, his swing was badly affected by the length and he was struggling with a low shot that went off to the right. We are building him a new set of Taylor Made RocketBladez.
Again as a comparison, we took a look at a well known online golf store of a standard set of the same clubs, David would have paid €72 less and they would not have been matched to his swing nor have the same performance as his ForeGolf Clubs
