I was sent this fantastic video recently (thanks Team Harrington) and I believe it highlights the importance of the right shaft to suit the golfer. More importantly it proves that amateur golfers should not automatically assume that they should be using a “regular” flex “standard” production shaft.
In order for all this to make scientific sense I need to get a bit technical ….
If we look at the shaft and head stability on the Tour players clubs you can see how stable the head and resulting hit is.
This is largely down to two factors:
First, the ball is hit in the exact middle or centre of the club where it is precisely balanced or centred (marketers call this the “Sweet-Spot” but I prefer the middle) thanks to the shaft delivering the head to the ball very squarely.
Second, the shaft in the pro club is quite obviously perfectly matched or fitted to the golfer in terms of specific flex, tip load to delivery capabilities and is much lower in torque resulting in far less “twisting”. Essentially he is using a custom built club designed for him and his swing and has nothing to do with his skill level.
In relation to the shaft in the amateurs club – the higher flexed, less stable tip end has a number of drawbacks that affect the overall playing characteristics of the golf club in the video.
First, since the tip end is more flexible, it has less rigidity and the tip end of the shaft tends to twist and bend when the load of the face strike are exerted on it. In particular, when a golf club is swung, the high torque forces acting on the large, heavy club head tend to twist the tip end of the shaft causing the club head to un-square and strike the golf ball at an angle, leading to inaccurate golf shots.
Second, as the golf club head strikes the golf ball, a force is exerted on the golf club head by the golf ball, which also may tend to bend the tip end of the shaft and un-square the club head. Third, the more flexible shaft cannot properly support the weight of a golf club head especially during the speed of a swing and the head tends to droop which in turn causes the shaft to bend. Twisting and bending causes the club head face to strike the golf ball at an angle which leads to very inaccurate golf shots.
This inaccuracy of the shot has nothing to do with skill level but rather the inadequacy of the shaft to control the club head.
