At ForeGolf, we've found that there is far too much bounce on most of today’s wedges. Here's a guide to bounce on wedges, chipping and bunker shots

At ForeGolf, we’ve found that there is far too much bounce on most of today’s wedges.
- Most wedges and the bounce on them are usually designed by R&D guys based in California, USA.
- In Ireland, we don’t have the ground or sand to deal with a lot of bounce.
So Rule #1: When you’re buying a Wedge and you have a choice,
- Choose the lower degree of bounce (4-8 degrees) rather than the higher (10-14 degrees) one.

.
When it comes to chipping, bounce is not your friend, take a look at the photo of the two wedges
The Wedge on the left: your typical sand wedge or high bounce, wide soled wedge that comes in most sets.
- This design as you can see makes it harder to get the club under the ball.
- It’s difficult to allow the ball up and into the face without pressing the shaft forward and de-lofting the club.
- This is a very hard wedge to chip with.

The Wedge on the right: Callaway Mack Daddy Tour Grind Wedge.
- It has a smaller, narrower sole and a special grind that reduces the bounce and back edge of the club.
- This special grind on the bottom lets the front of the face or “front edge” sits closer to the ground.
- It allows the golfer to slide the sole under the ball much easier.
- If you want to chip the ball get rid of that fat wide soled wedge and get a thinner, low bounce for crisp front edge strikes.

For bunker shots and deep rough close to the green use LOFT not BOUNCE for the best results.
- Irish bunkers have small grains of sand that usually bind together making the bunkers harder and more solid (for most of the year).
- The grass here is also narrower in blade and mostly hugs and holds the ball rather than burying it.
- This means high bounce will make it harder to get the ball out successfully.
- Use a 58* or 60* low bounce wedge for these shots and the deeper the bunkers the more loft you need.
