MOI is defined as a measure of a body’s resistance to angular acceleration (twisting) and very specifically in the driver. High MOI is most noticeable during imperfect contact between the ball and the clubface, such as off-centre hits.
So, in simple terms if you hit a shot with a driver and miss the middle of the clubface how much does the clubhead twist and shoot the ball offline.
I sometimes use the analogy of figure skating to explain MOI: a skater spinning with their arms out wide represents a “high” MOI, resulting in a slower rotation, while pulling arms close to the body represents a “low” MOI, leading to faster rotation. In golf, a club with high MOI is considered forgiving, making it fairly important for achieving straighter shots.
The size of modern drivers, limited to a maximum of 460 cc, is influenced by the need to increase MOI. Larger heads distribute weight toward the outer edges, increasing MOI and making the club more “forgiving”.
In the coming golf season you will be hearing (and seeing) a lot about a new design that will lead to very High MOI in drivers but it’s important to note that with this High MOI can come a challenge with ball spin and overall peak height of ball flight. Like the TaylorMade Qi10 Driver (see more)
Matching the correct shaft tip flex with MOI and matching the most efficient driver loft is necessary to achieve optimum distance. Be careful, as picking a driver with high MOI is not enough on its own as too much height from spin will result in very straight BUT very short drives.
