A quick story for every high-handicap golfer who thinks “ custom fitting isn’t for me “
Custom fitting isn’t just for low handicappers or tour players. It’s for anyone who wants their clubs to work with their swing.
Are you a high-handicap golfer who’s been told you have to play regular flex shafts and big, forgiving iron heads just because of the number on your card? This is something I see all the time and it’s one of the biggest misconceptions in golf.
In a recent fitting, I worked with a 22-handicap golfer who was skeptical of what custom fitting could do. On paper, most people would’ve pushed him straight into lightweight, high-launch “game-improvement” irons. But when I looked past the handicap and actually measured what he was doing, a different story showed up. He was strong, athletic, and swinging the driver at around 100 mph.
The issue wasn’t his ability; it was his equipment. He’d been put into light, regular-flex steel shafts and overly forgiving heads. The result was a very high, floaty ball flight, big draws, and no real control. That setup simply couldn’t handle the speed he was generating.
So we changed the approach. I moved him from a 95g shaft into a 120g, stiffer steel option and paired it with a more adjustable iron head. By strengthening the loft, we brought the flight down and tightened everything up.
The difference was immediate. His ball flight became lower, more compact, and far more predictable. He picked up about 25 yards and, more importantly, started delivering the club with authority instead of fighting it, the wild high draws disappeared.
The takeaway is simple, your handicap should never decide your equipment.
Bottom line is just because you’re a high handicapper doesn’t mean you need high loft and regular flex shafts. Don’t let your handicap determine your equipment choices.
