As someone who has played off a much lower handicap in his younger days, and is really just getting back into golf, Colin came needing help with his equipment to be able to do this. He has been working on his swing plane, to get it a little more upright as it was extremely flat and rotational in the past, and not efficient.
The problem in doing this for the benefits of efficiency is that the launch angles and spin rates are now much higher than it has ever been, and now need controlling better through the clubs, as the swing is now producing higher numbers.
We needed to reduce the launch angle with lower loft angles (2.75* in the driver, 2.5* in the 3 wood, and 2* in the 5 wood), increase the stiffness of the shaft and reduce the torque, making the kick point higher for lower launch and maximum control of spin and launch but with plenty of feel.
Heads wise, they just need to look neat, tide, and open to the player eye for confidence.
So, I took the step of calling the guys at ForeGolf to make an appointment with a view to getting new irons.
After arriving I went and warmed up on the beautiful range and was ready for the analysis. To start out David and I had a quick chat about my game and I hit some balls so he could get a feel where I was at.
I had always felt I had hit the ball a little high with a tail off to the right and had been previously told this wasn’t the worst complaint to have but David seemed to think otherwise, explaining the possible reasons why this could happen, as well as identifying the wasted energy in producing this shot.
So he set about his magic. He quickly deemed my irons were 3 degrees too flat and the regular shafts weren’t up to my swing speed. This had previously been about 90mph but had increased to 99mph recently. Having arrived with a view to staying with Mizuno branded irons, David explained to merits and flaws to a host of brands.
With many brands opting for high launch capabilities, he recommended something that launched lower in order to counteract my natural high shot and give me more distance. Having also tested different shafts he narrowed the club choice to two models.
I ended up with Callaway’s X-Hot Pro irons with Mitsubishi X flex shafts. This combo produced a shot with a piercing trajectory carrying 26 yards further, with a tight strike grouping on the face.
Having selected the irons, the woods were next. A fan of Titleist woods for their head shape, I had built an odd combination of shafts and clubs, again not helping my high launch tendency. Although having hit all of my woods uncharacteristically consistently, David identified plenty of scope for improvement. He found I actually hit my 3 wood, 3 yards further than my driver!!
So where did it end?
David decreased my launch angle with the driver from 14 deg to 9 deg, the ball rpm from 4500 to 2200, increase in swing speed from 99 to 105 mph and increased carry from 229 to 267 yards, all against a 2 &1/2 club headwind !!!
We ended at a Titleist 913D with X flex shaft, set to 6.75 loft!!! Never in my dreams did I think I would need something like that ! He also purposed a Taylor Made RBZ S2 Tour 3 wood with X flex with 13 loft and a Taylor Made RBZ S2 Tour 3 wood HT with X flex with 16.5 loft as my “5 wood”. As I’m not a fan of rescue clubs David suggested the high launch 3 wood as an alternative. And the Tour models are a definite compliment to these setups!
At the end of the session we both determined that even though the intention was a set of irons, the woods might be a better starting point as the benefits in distance and accuracy are so obvious. A day sooner than hoped, Aaron rang me with the good news that the woods were ready. I had hoped to drop in and collect my new clubs but Aaron had them shipped and delivered the following day to me.
So 2 rounds of golf down and where am I with the new woods?
There is room for more practice and improvement, but one thing is for sure: the confidence of standing over the ball on the tee knowing that this ball is going a long way is a nice feeling!!
What David and the lads do at Fore Golf is wonderful and anyone with an interest in improving should be looking to make an appointment in the near future. I did what most people playing golf do, read some reviews and buy a club off the shelf thinking this is the correct solution to improvement. Custom fitting is the only way to be sure that you are getting the most from your clubs and Fore Golf do it wonderfully! Now just to finding money to order the irons.
