We’ve had the new SLDR driver here for testing for a month or so now.
It turned up out of the blue in July in a few of the Tour bags at The Open in Muirfield. We knew very little about this new driver other than it wasn’t white. It was actually a shade of quite “normal” looking grey.
That aside the club is actually a great product for the strong ball strikers out there. With a faster head speed we normally struggle to keep the ball flight low with low head spin. The new larger head design of today’s drivers can make it difficult to get the ball down out of the sky by keeping the ball spin low. We normally have to then be very inventive with lower lofts and this can lead to poor control characteristics.
So in short this driver is suited to a low spin – high flight style of hit or for a golfer with lots of club-head speed who needs better control.
We believe that it will suit the golfer who struggles to get the ball flight low and penetrating off the tee or if you get very little run on the ball when it hits the fairway.
But remember with very low spin the correct loft and shaft is now vital so getting fitted is important in order to unlock the performance.
