Review: Mizuno JPX 850 Boron Forged Iron

Review: Mizuno JPX 850 Boron Forged Iron

The new Mizuno JPX 850 Boron Forged Iron takes things to a whole new level and is the best thing to come along from real iron design in the past 15 years.

This is an independent review following club testing by Derek Murray at ForeGolf

The NEW Steel

Most of today’s iron heads are made from a stainless steel mix or in a few cases forged steel. I have seen a quite a bit of trickery over the years by the big golf brands with strengthening lofts and lengthening of shafts are desperate attempts to make it look like the ball is going further.

goodstuff

  • .The steel in the heads is a special new mix of steel called 1025E.
  • By a long shot the best “feeling” club in the current market place.
  • Boron Forged steel is used quite a lot in the automotive industry and specifically by the Toyota car group. It is used for applications where high strength and light weight is required.
  • It took Mizuno 6 years to develop for golf clubs.
  • This unique mix allows for incredibly soft feel with distance. In the past soft steel felt great but just didn’t go far.
  • During testing we set the loft to our standard, so the 6 iron was at 30 degrees and it still outperformed other branded irons for distance that were set with a much stronger loft.
  • We can’t wait to see what is coming next from this technology and the future applications into hybrids and perhaps woods?

lookout

  • .The right shaft is critical to this superb head so fitting is a must. Don’t buy a standard set and expect it to yield instant results.
  • The price tag is at the top end so this will be a long term investment in your equipment.
  • There is no 3 iron available in this head so if you use one and need one in your new setup, then walk away.
  • The standard off the rack, True Temper XP 115 shaft doesn’t do this head justice, we prefer the KBS C-Taper Lite.
