UPDATE: How to get the most from your TaylorMade R15 Driver, we’ve got even more feedback to share from the clubs in play following an updated R&D Session.
Since our original post about the Taylor Made R15 our view on custom fitting this club has evolved. We’ve taken feedback from our customers who have the club in play and conducted another R&D session. Here’s even more details on how to get the best from this superb driver.
If you hit the ball High with High Spin
- Go for the 430cc head and match it with an Aldila RIP Alpha 60 or 70 gram shaft.
- If you spin the ball, it’s likely that you are strong and hit it hard, in that case don’t be afraid of the RIP Alpha 60 in X Flex . It works great thanks to the slightly heavier weight of the head.
- Keep the sliding weights together but favouring a slight “draw” setting and adjust the hosel to a 1-2 click lower position.
- We also found the Fujikura Motore Tour Spec Stiff and X Flex and the Project X Black Graphite shafts great for a lower more penetrating ball flight.
- Our most popular loft has been 9.5* with the “loft up” message well and truly shelved for this product.
- It’s best to use the loft on the 460cc head to help position the required pitch or launch angle as we’ve found that almost all the lofts including the 12* will spin the ball quite low.
If you have a Lower or Slower Ball Speed
- We’ve seen great success from more loft from this club so if you swing it smooth and slow then don’t be afraid of the 12* head. Remember a lower loft won’t necessarily hit it further with this head design.
- If you need a lightweight shaft solution for more club head speed or more feel then you might want to steer clear of this head.
- All the adjust-ability parts and screws make this head heavier than normal so a lightweight shaft, sub 55 grams, might feel strange as an option and will make the head feel very heavy, which could affect ball flight and swing rhythm.
Just to note (to recap our previous article)
When you set the Hosel to the LOWER position,
- The head will open the face angle and will FADE the shot more (R/H Head) and similarly if you set the hosel to the HIGHER position the ball will DRAW more.
- Also remember that there are positions or “clicks” as we call them in-between the Standard, Lower and Higher positions so you can tweak the settings half way.
- The UPR or Upright setting to the back of the hosel is for a more upright shaft position and will usually make the ball draw more also. As said, there are clicks between all the positions so be sure to experiment).
- We also found that this driver is better with a SHORTER shaft length so we would recommend it be kept at 45” maximum and even a little shorter works great.
- We mentioned this in the previous blog post, if you spray the face with some foot spray or even deodorant so you can see where you strike the ball on the face, you can then position the sliding weights to be each side of the strike area. This creates super stability for the head, feels great off the face and also creates some very consistent spin numbers.
In short, this driver is definitely in our top 3 for this year but it’s adjust-ability is complicated.
Its a great driver and its down to the correct allocation of not only its very precise technology but also the matching of the correct shaft to make the clubs adjust-ability work for you.
