Taylor Made M1 vs Taylor Made R15

Taylor Made M1 vs Taylor Made R15

We’ve had a few tweets asking how the new Taylor Made M1 Driver stacks up against the R15, here's the results from our independent testing.

Written by David Williams & Derek Murray

First of all, The TaylorMade M1 and R15 Drivers are two very different products and will do different things based on their own unique design.

The Test:

Took place in The ForeGolf ClubRoom and results were averaged and measured with the help of FlightScope using real golf balls.

We Used:

The same shaft for this test and also the same golfer. It was the tester’s choice, an Aldila RIP 60 X Flex shaft.

The Results:

The graph below shows all the data that came from the test.

  • Pay special attention to the clubhead speed it was very similar in the two drivers.
  • You can see the new M1 and especially the 430 head is showing a higher ball speed overall.
  • Faster ball speed with lower spin is the holy grail for driver distance.

  • You will also see that the spin rate on the M1 head is much lower which is a big part of the new improved design.
  • This lower spin means the ball will fly through the air more efficiently and when launched higher could go even further.
  • The added speed off the face that you can see is down to a new cup design behind the face and also in the reduced crown weight and centre of gravity placement. (It’s important to note that with the reduction of the spin on the driver it can become harder to keep straight as a higher back-spinning ball will in theory stay much straighter).
  • This is where the further tuning of the club in the hosel and also the adjustment of the sliding weights is vital to harness all the different parts of the driver and have deliver them into the ball for maximum, successful results.

The Bottom line

The M1 is faster off the face and spins lower through the air than not just the R15 but every other driver in the market place

The M1 430cc Driver could be the biggest thing to happen off the tee for 2015-2016.
