What are your Golf Resolutions for 2016 ?

A few weeks ago, a customer arrived for his custom fit with a very clear idea of what he wanted from his golf in 2016.

Here’s the difficulty he was having and the changes we made to his clubs to help him get ready for the new season.

  • He was currently an 11 handicapper but had in the past, he played off 5.
  • His irons and wedges were pretty good apart from loft and lie calibration issues.
  • The real problem was with with his woods.

This is what he wanted to achieve for 2016

  1. To get back down to single figures.
  2. To hit more fairways off the tee and fed up missing it left.
  3. More consistency in my game.
  4. Get match ready for the season but I don’t have enough time to practice.

The Problem: The miss was left and the golfer was playing Regular Flex graphite with very soft tip profile in his Fairway wood and hybrid. The miss was largely a swing issue but the golfer didn’t have time to fix it with lessons and practice.

The Solution: We firmed up the shaft and lowered the torque with a firmer tip profile that effectively “slowed” down the head rotation and stopped the ball going left (the new heads we used were adjustable so we could tweak the head angles if the swing improved in the future)

The Problem: The old driver was a Ping SF Tec 10* with a regular flex graphite shaft. This head is designed to be “more forgiving”, which it is, for the right golfer. However, it is heavily draw biased and with the soft and very long shaft meant that the club wanted to go left off the tee – all on its own.

The Solution:  We brought in the Taylor Made M1 430cc head in 10.5* with adjustable weights and a tuneable hosel that allowed us to up the loft for more launch, lower the spin for more control and open the face to create an anti-hook setup.

We also used an Aldila RIP 60 Stiff shaft at a much shorter length than his old driver and now the ball starts right and the golfer can draw it into the fairway. We effectively took away the miss left through the club and as the driver can’t rotate and turn over, the ball goes straight and can’t miss the fairway left anymore.

The clubs are now in play and the golfer can’t miss the fairway or green left anymore. The swing is still the same and he can hit the ball the way he wants to.

We have fast-tracked his New Year resolutions and he can now start the year off with a real fighting chance of getting back into single figures.
