It seems the way forward for shaft technology is for ultra light weight with Xtra stiff flex.
The difficulty of light weight historically was that when it was light there was less of it and as a result it was very flexible and un-stable. When the shaft is light the head goes faster and the ball goes further.
We have taken delivery of the new Oban 55 gram X Flex and we have been using Aldila NVS 55 Stiff for a long time now. A very famous left handed PGA Tour professional recently introduced a light-weight shaft in X flex and is hitting the ball 20 yards further.
