Technology alone will not hit the ball further

The future of the golf club lies with the innovations in materials, design and advanced technology. With the likes of Taylor Made, Cobra and Titleist presenting new never seen before technology in their clubs for next season, the game, it seems, is now getting easier.

Even World #1 Rory McIlroy agrees when he spoke to Ewan Murray last month:

“The technology lets maybe some of the lesser players catch up with the better players. I’m just happy to be part of that group of 16. I think the reason it is like this, fields aremuch deeper. Partly because the guys have just got better and have worked hard; they are putting more into the game physically, mentally, practice, technical, everything”.

“But I think one of the big things is the technology. I think 25 years ago you had the really good players that could play with basically anything and nowadays the technology lets maybe some of the lesser players catch up with the better players. And I think that’s why you see so many more guys winning these days.”

Rory has seen innovations in technology himself with a new shaft in his new driver producing more distance and a tighter dispersion. Titleist have made sure that their new club performs just as it should for Rory with three different technicians assigned to test Rory, the club and a host of different shaft options just to make sure the club is perfect for him.

In fact, the perfect shaft that Rory settled on for his new 913 driver is so specialised that Titleist themselves don’t even offer it to consumers !

So really it’s not enough that technology exists. It’s not enough that it’s new or that the club has some special face or moveable hosel.

The benefits in technology are only really beneficial if it’s correctly applied to the individual.

How good a club is claimed to be or how good a club can be are two very different things and one that only proper custom fitting will unlock.
