This new iron design from Taylor Made has a small slit in the sole of the iron head and this slit is then filled with a black plastic material. Taylor Made have called it “This Little Thing” and their design team have heralded it’s the next big thing in golf and that it will produce unbelievable distance.
We tested the iron in its standard steel shaft in stiff flex and indeed the ball went very far but it also went very high and especially in the longer, 4 and 6 iron.
The feel off the face is very hot and feels crisp and very fast. We managed to get our man to hit the 4 iron up to 200 yards so distance will not be a problem. The main issue we see for potential clients is the height the ball goes in the air.
Here are a few points on the new irons:
- Ball flight is very high in the irons so loft setting and more importantly shaft choice will be critical to get the ball flight to suit Irish conditions.
- Getting the right shaft weight, flex and profile is the real key to unlocking the true potential of this club.
- If you hit the ball fairly high already or don’t want a very high ball flight inyour irons then the standard stock shafted club will not work for you.
- The standard stock shaft is nothing new and is the same steel shaft as theoriginal Burner 2.0. This shaft will hit the ball very high and is quite soft in the tip.
- The new slot in the iron ends at the 8 iron so the feel of the 8-PW is differentand the ball flies differently than the 3-7.
- There will be a TP model out in February which has a thinner top-line and asmaller head with less offset. This should help with lowering the ball flight slightly and we will have the results of testing when it is available.
