So how does this new driver design stack up against its predecessors ? well the guys in Acushnet don’t move to far from home when it comes to design and certainly this new head bares all the same shape and lines from last year’s product.
A few things to know about the new driver:
- It comes in two head shapes. The D3 is the deep faced smaller head that goes a little lower and spins a bit less. The D2 head is the slightly larger head with a bit more forgiveness off toe and heel hits.
- The shape of the driver is largely unchanged with the classic Titleist teardrop shape still the same as in previous times.
- The weight at the back of the head is slightly deeper and wider and the driver is a lot heavier in swing weight than previous models.
- If you are looking for a lightweight long length driver this product will not be the way to go.
- The new 7.5* lofted D3 is a welcomed addition to the range and keeps the ball good and low with low spin from this high launching head.
- We feel that the hosel adjuster could have done with an upgrade, as the lofts on the driver (when changed) open the face when it gets low and close the face when the loft goes high. We feel another dimension of this new driver should have been the ability to have a neutral face angle on the loft settings.
- The sound of the strike is the usual solid low thud phonetic of the Titleist Product and ball flight is generally low spinning. Again and in previous models and with all the great adjustability of the different heads the shaft is very important to get just right. It’s a very high performance driver that needs a near prefect shaft to make it perform. Don’t try and wing it by putting a standard Scoda engine in this hi-spec Ferrari.
- Up-charges from Titleist on the driver for other “exotic” shafts can make the driver a lot dearer than standard and not one you want to get wrong as it canturn out very, very expensive. “Check twice and cut once”, as Don says.
