Tapping into the new technology in the R1 driver and Rocketballz (RBZ) Stage 2 Fairway and Rescue Clubs is not as simple as it seems, at ForeGolf we can fine tune this club using not only the right settings but also the right shaft.
If you just buy one off the rack, its not as simple as a quick twist and a click and its done.
In fact this driver has so many settings there are actually 168 ways to get it wrong.
The R1 Driver
- It is a stand alone product for this year with no complimenting fairway wood or rescue club.
- The driver comes with an adjustable hosel like in previous years but this year the hosel allows for some added shaft orientation that can help affect the delivery angle of the head at impact.
- There are still the two weights to affect the centre of gravity and help with adjustment for fade and draw bias.
- The compass shaped dial on the sole-plate is reportedly designed to open or close the face angle but we found a much more affective application for it and this, for us, is the real secret to this driver performing correctly.
- The new graphics on the crown can be a little distracting but the layout is designed to create better alignment and reminds us of the BMW M-Power colours. We think it makes the driver look fast and sporty.
- The driver spins very low and is a great product for today’s high launch-low spin applications once calibrated correctly. However be very careful as the adjustable hosel does not actually adjust the loft of the driver, it changes the angle of the shaft. Don’t think that two clicks and the driver will actually go from 8.5 to 12 degrees, as we said its not quite that simple.
- As the shaft angle is being adjusted the shaft itself is very important. We found in testing that getting the shaft tip to deliver the head of the club to the ball at the correct angle is critical to getting the ball to fly correctly. Get the shaft wrong in this driver and the ball flight will be very high and possibly much shorter than the true technology allows.
- This driver is a fantastic bit of kit but only when ALL the different parts are tuned to suit the golfer and trust us it took nearly 6 days of dissecting the club to unlock the secret of its inner workings.
The Rocketballz Stage 2 (RBZ2) Fairway Woods and Rescue Clubs
- Are almost identical in performance to their predecessor, the ball travels very fast off the hit thanks to the very thin face.
- Like the R1 driver there is a new graphic on the crown which again looks fine.
- The sole-plate of the new fairway has been thinned out and the weight in the sole has moved up to a more central location, closer to the face. All this affects the centre of gravity and hits the ball much higher. This is where Taylor Made have found some added yardage in testing. If the ball is higher or longer in the air it can go further.
- This new higher flight needs to be properly regulated for the player so the correct loft configuration and shaft choice is again critical or all you will get is a popped up, high flighted fairway shot that unless properly fitted can actually end up going a lot shorter.
