Short Game Tip : Distance Control with Putting

Short Game Tip : Distance Control with Putting

With the world famous Dave Pelz Short Game School only a solid 7 iron from our front door, we thought we would have a chat with their head instructor Jussi Pitkanen.

Jussi gave us a putting tip to share about Perfy who demonstrates the perfect putting stroke.

A useful way to think about controlling distance with your approach putts

  • This is commonly referred to as a pendulum type stroke and is very easy to execute.
  • Learn to let the length of your back-swing dictate how far the ball will roll and allowing the putter to swing through the same distance through as back.
  • Internalising this mindset for your distance putts means that the rhythm of your strokes (count to 1 on your backstroke, then 2 into impact) always remains the same.
  • The only thing that changes is the length of your swing. Or simply, short strokes for short putts, long strokes for long putts
  • Many golfers try to hit their putts harder using their hands and wrists rather than swing back further and this makes learning good touch very difficult.
  • Perfy, our putting robot in the picture, is used to demonstrate the value and simplicity of pendulum rhythm; the simplest, most repeatable way to control your distance.
