It’s Ireland and it can get windy and cold but real custom fitting is done outdoors. You and the fitter need to see ball flight, you need a real target and environment not a simulated indoor test.
Make sure the balls you are hitting during your fitting are not dodgy range balls. Dodgy, inconsistent golf balls leads to dodgy, inconsistent golf clubs. You need a decent real golf ball to get proper relevant ball readings. We use a TaylorMade golf ball that has been designed and made for us to use at our fittings.
You should see the technician measuring the lengths of your current clubs, the weight, the swingweight, the loft and lie angles and even the grip size. We check and measure everything twice and your clubs that you already play with should be a big part of your fitting.
Our technicians need to know what you are using so that we can prove that your new clubs will play better than your old clubs. If you don’t see any measuring equipment at your fitting or your current clubs aren’t tested then run a mile.
When Derek worked on Tour the system for fitting clubs was simple but very effective. The technician would work with the player on the range and figure out the right head, loft, shaft and complete spec of the club.He would then take the measurements and hand them to the ClubMaker in the tour truck.
The guy building the club would follow the exact spec derived from the fitting and the club was built there and then to perfectly match the observations of the fitter and requirements of the player. All Custom Clubs must be built. If you don’t see anyone building clubs when you’re getting fitted then how do you know the club you got fitted for is actually the club you’re getting?
Custom Fitting in big stores that’s already full of stock is usually a tactic to sell you something that’s already on the floor. That’s not custom fitting that’s selling standard clubs, as for being told that you are “pretty much standard” that should start ringing alarm bells.
Unless your Rory McIlroy and TaylorMade are paying you a small fortune to play just one brand then make sure you have access to more than just one make of club during your fitting. Multi brand fitting will allow you to be tested with the best available technology in golf.
Remember “Single brand fitting” can only produce the best clubs available to the brand, not the best equipment available to you.
Our fitters are the best in the business, we have 20 years of experience and spent time advising some of the best players in the world on Tour. As the industry evolves we are always adding to our knowledge but there is nothing we don’t know about equipment technology and how to apply it to the golfer. We advise and write about equipment for Golf World and Golf Digest Magazines.
So, make sure you know your fitter’s level of experience. Custom Fitting is a very specialised subject and must be performed by trained experts.
Our system of custom fitting has always been about results. We won’t let you change or build you a club unless we can make a very positive difference. Did you know that over 70% of our customers have been recommended by a friend, that speaks volumes about what we do.

Ask other golfers to see if the place you are getting “fitted” at and the clubs you are getting “fitted” for will actually work and lower your scores ?
