Independent Review of the new Mizuno JPX 850 Driver

It’s a given that Mizuno make outstanding irons and have done so for as long as we can remember. This year we tested the new JPX 850 driver in its piercing blue colour-way. Driver design in the past with Mizuno hasn’t quite worked out but this model is one to consider for the bag this year.

Here’s our quick review guide to the new for 2015 JPX 850 Driver

  • Super shaft movement to adjust the loft 8 different ways between 7.5* and 11.5* which gives great golfer tune-ability.
  • 5 different weight ports that allow for COG adjustment for draw and fade ball flight problems.
  • Great blue colour from this very neat looking 460cc head.
  • ForeGolf Exclusive custom shaft options giving unbelievable improved performance and almost all at no upcharge.
  • The strike off the face feels great and is very solid but fast – a new rebound designed crown allows for more flex across the whole face.

watchout

  • We wouldn’t advise “leaving your mark” and roofing many drives or topping the odd shot as this hi-gloss blue paint won’t hide much.
  • The two weight screws are a little bit fiddly and you have to be very careful when adjusting or moving them around as you can over tighten them and break them into the head.
  • The standard Fujikura Orochi shaft that comes in the driver is, we feel, only a very average shaft for the head and we have found some better shafts to get even more distance from this great head.
  • With any driver that has a lot of adjustability, buying one off the rack and hoping it works without proper Mizuno trained advice and fitting is golfing madness.
  • With all the tooling for the different parts of adjustability this driver is a little on the expensive side and will retail around the €400 mark but we feel worth every euro.
