This time of year temperature plays a big part in golf, here's 5 Tips to help you get the best from winter golf.

The cold can have a huge affect on our bodies and if you don’t have the right clothing on your game will suffer. Like the clothing the type of golf ball you choose will also have a fairly large affect on your game this time of year.

1. As there is a lot less run on the softer fairways and approaches, a harder compression golf ball will back-spin less and go further when it hits the ground.

2. If the clouds roll in and it’s very grey or there are a lot of leaves on the ground. Opt for a YELLOW golf ball, they are much easier to spot in the darker sky and on the ground.

3. Keep your second or spare golf ball in your pocket. Swap the golf balls on every hole to get the best in distance off the tee. A warm golf ball flies further than a cold one, fact.

4. Try and keep the ball as clean as possible. With muddier, wetter conditions, dirt on the golf ball will upset air draft over the dimples and play havoc with your ball flight and distance.

5. A lower compression golf ball will spin less in the air and fly straighter especially for faster swinging players and also if it’s very windy.Opt for a harder golf ball as it will cut down on spin and especially side spin (off plane rotation) and help to keep the ball going straighter.

Hi Derek,

I have noticed something when I played 13 holes yesterday that I thought I might run by you. Basically I was rushing on to the first tee and only had a few of my kids golf balls in the bag. I normally play a Pro V1, or 1x.

The best ball I could find was a Titleist DT Solo. I would normally regard this as a “rock”.

I was pleasantly surprised when I hit 5/11 fairways and 8/13 greens. I finished 5 over for 13 holes.

The hook or slice that did come out, didn’t move half as much in the air as normal with the Pro Vx. Once or twice I thought I would need to shout fore, but it just didn’t spin off as much as the contact on the club face told me it would.

So my question?
Should I be using a harder ball then the ProV 1/1x? Am I more suitable to rocks ? (which are cheaper too)

If you want to hit more fairways and greens
but you are susceptible to missing due to excessive cuts or hooks, then swap for a “harder” golf ball.

The harder compression will cut down the spin and you will miss less. Our general advice is to use as hard a golf ball as you can stand to chip and putt with.

This time of year, however, we would advise everyone to use a harder (cheaper) golf ball.
