We’ve started to notice a trend during our custom fit sessions.
During testing (we would see lots of different types of golfers looking to upgrade to the latest technology) it transpires that they aren’t using up to 4 of the clubs in their set but have them in the bag all the same. Some golfers tell us that they don’t use the 3, 4 or 5 iron or that extra 5 and 7 wood that they have in the bag or sits at home in the garage.
This usually comes from clubs bought from a fit to sell environment, where the golfer is fitted in a store to be sold whatever clubs they have in stock. Most of these sets will have a 3 iron or 4 iron in them or is part of a “full set” and the client will be sold them as part of a “package”. They end up with a full bag or 13 clubs whether they will use all the clubs or not.
A while back, we spoke about the increase in yardage the new new irons, hybrids and fairway woods are achieving, it’s very important to have the correct spacing in the set or gaps will start appearing in your yardages. (read the article about distance being a problem). Same goes for wedges, where structured lofts and correct spacing is vital and again, one of the reasons why we insist on hand building our wedges.
By proper structure within the bag, you will not only cover all the yardages but you will also save money by only putting the clubs you need in the bag.
